Plug Power Inc.'s (PLUG) fourth-quarter loss widened to $16.5 million from $11.8 million as revenue dropped 40%.

The Latham, N.Y., energy product provider's loss widened to 19 cents a share on 85.8 million shares outstanding, from 16 cents a share on 73.3 million shares outstanding a year earlier.

Revenue fell to $2.7 million from $4.5 million, hurt as research and development contract revenue fell to $1.69 million from $3.43 million. On average, analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected a loss of 14 cents a share.

Plug Power shares were recently down 21 cents, or 3.6%, to $5.64.
