Just a bit reluctant to assist someone who equates US people with the
US
government and therefore dislikes us because of his political
attitude.
I know what you mean, but the fact is we've been best friends since
our teens in college. I've always loved the US he's the other way
about it. I usually go up a few times a year to stay at his place, but
my wife and I have made a good home down here that we're proud of. Put
another way, he's visiting me and my wife, not the US.
As hard as it is for your "friend" to believe, the agents at the
POE
don't think that every Canadian wants to be living and working
in the US
Well, they gave his wife a 45 minute interrogation when she crossed by
train near Sarnia while visiting one of her friends in Chicago, back
about 5 or 6 years ago, and that's been foremost on his mind since
then. I've crossed probably 500 times in my life and never had a
problem, but then again, I never had a one-way ticket into the US
either!
You can keep Quebec if it ever comes down to that. The place of my birth and a province very dear to my heart, merci
beaucoup!
He will not be interrogated in a locked room with a rubber hose to
make
him spill his guts that he is really entering the US to work
illegally.
If he is questioned more intently then others, it is because his
distain
and fear makes him stand out.
That's about what I figured. Having a POE inspector turn him away
because he doesn't have proof he's returning to Canada would guarantee
I'd never see him down here, and frankly that's something I don't want
to have happen.
Let's face it, he is coming to the US during a US Holiday (the same
holiday as in Canada only a month later) and he has a job and place
in
Canada. He is simply a visitor. One of millions that cross the
Can/Am
border yearly for just that purpose.
Yup, and strictly above board at that. Again, I only presented this to
the group here because he and I have both "heard the stories" of
Non-American citizens having problems crossing into the US with 1-way
tickets, and the situation with his wife getting the 3rd degree even
WITH a return ticket.
On a different topic, and while I'm thinking about it, I'm filing my
N-400 tomorrow with the VSC. Anybody know what the current processing
queue is like these days?
My husband is a Canadian as well. Born in Montreal and raised just
outside of the city, served 36 yrs in the RCAF, lived throughout
Canada and Europe during those years, and now in NY and a USC. I
should have noted that those are his words ;-) He has no love of his
province of birth.
One question re your friend. Like America, Canada is a land of
immigrants. Is his heritage a nationality which would put an agent on
guard, i.e. Middle Eastern, African? This is the only reason I can
think of that might make him open to suspicion. One other way to ensure
a hassle free visit is to bring something to prove his ties to Canada,
house deed, letter from work, etc.
Check the USCIS site for the timeline for VSC and your district office.
The VSC is only the holding tank for your petition. It will be
transferred to the district office for the interview. VSC will send you
a receipt when the petition is received and will schedule your
biometrics for security clearance. When the district office is ready
for interviewing the material will be send to them and an appointment
letter sent to you.
My husband became a USC in 2003. It was a 7 month wait.
