I have always enjoyed eating cereals for breakfast from time to time
but since I've developed Pre-diabetes I can no longer eat any of these
cereal foods. I've tried many different brands and types but any of
them will send my BG reading up above 200 mg/dL.

I can get by on a high protein, low carb menu and keep my BG readings
well within the acceptable range but if I step over the line and eat
even a small bowl of any kind of cereal with whole milk and NO
sweetener at all I really take a hit.

Is this an ordinary situation, or am I just hypersensitive to cereals?
Is there any brand/type that I might try to see if I can tolerate it?
Thanks, Gordon

In this group we've found that people tend to vary quite a bit in how
sensitive they are to various foods. If you are only "Pre-diabetic"
and finding you have such a reaction that is a bit unusual, yes. But
only a bit.

One thing to try is oatmeal of the Steel-Cut Oats variety. This is a
slow cooking oatmeal and a significant number of diabetics have posted
here that it affects their bg readings much less than other cereals
(including other oatmeal styles, even other slow cooking styles). But
other people find they react to this just as much as with other
styles. So this is something you'll just have to try - and then
measure and see how YOU react.

Of those who have tried it, the Trader Joe's house brand of Steel-Cut
Oats has generally received good marks. But they don't have Trader
Joe's stores everywhere, so this may or may not be of help to you.
