(I should google Randy's references to slim T2s ... the implicit
assumption in many places that T2s are obese is, well, disturbing.)

Ever since I was diagnosed and came to ASD some ten years ago, I've
carried a figure in my mind of 80% as being the proportion of newly
diagnosed diabetics who were overweight or obese. See for example
http://tinyurl.com/3g7woqy and
http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C7001.html and
http://www.diabetesguidelines.com/health/dwk/pro/guidelines/
ispad/04_06.asp

The explanation I was given at the time by the good people there was
that fat was the least insulin resistant of the three main organs of
liver, muscle and fat, so any excess calories turned up as fat rather
than being laid down as glycogen in liver or muscle tissue. Made sense
to me.

I was one of the 20% who weren't overweight, and you may be also, but I
don't think there's any getting away from the fact that a great many
are, when they're first diagnosed. Where the figure of 80% originally
comes from, I don't know, and it's probably passed around from article
to article, but I can well believe it.

Obesity in diagnosed T2s ~ 58%, obesity + overweight > 86%

I noticed that my weight increased by 5 kg after I was started on
glimepiride, Internet help got me on reduced carb and I've lost the extra
weight again. I see elsewhere that weight increase is mentioned as a side
effect of injecting insulin.
