It may not show up on your monitor, but I would be afraid

No, not in the least. Those issues are caused by the damage caused by
high blood glucose - which a low carb diet seeks to avoid. Actually, I
can't go as high up the carb chain as Atkins recommends, because my
meter gets upset - but so far I have spent 3 1/2 years on a low-spike
diet loosely based on Atkins with no progression in my diabetes at
all, and a reversal of the neuropathy I had at diagnosis. All health
monitors (lipids, liver and kidney function, A1c) have moved in
positive directions. I intend to eat this way for the rest of my life.

Nicky and Susan, I was diagnosed in 1991 and who knows how long
before that I had high blood sugar? Sixteen years have passed since
diagnosis. I do not know what my future will bring but thus far am
controlling blood sugars with a high carb (whole food) Pritikin type
diet and do not take meds. The only time my sugars have gone up is
during times of extreme stress, like when I was caring for my mom who
had dementia. No retinopathy, kidney problems, have normal liver and
kidney tests. A little neuropathy in my toes since diagnosis.
Sometimes I do spike very high after meals of a lot of carbs combined
with no exercise. But my usual reading before eating the next meal is
between 90 and 100. On days I do strength training the readings are
in the 80's. Sometimes my fasting level is over 100, oddly enough
when I have had a very low carb 8 pm meal (like a raw vegetable
salad). I try to eat around 300 calories, four equally spaced times a
day. I usually go over the desired 1200 calories but rarely higher
than 1600 calories.

I am glad so many are doing well on different diets. Could you tell
me what you eat if not Atkins. How low is low carb? Today for lunch
I had a tomato, kale with onions (steamed), a small potato and a
handful of purple grapes. This morning for breakfast I had Amy's
Organic Black Bean Soup with a little fat free organic yogurt in it
and a few grapes for dessert. (You can see there was a big sale on
grapes at my market).
