No, not in the least. Those issues are caused by the damage caused by
high blood glucose - which a low carb diet seeks to avoid. Actually, I
can't go as high up the carb chain as Atkins recommends, because my
meter gets upset - but so far I have spent 3 1/2 years on a low-spike
diet loosely based on Atkins with no progression in my diabetes at
all, and a reversal of the neuropathy I had at diagnosis. All health
monitors (lipids, liver and kidney function, A1c) have moved in
positive directions. I intend to eat this way for the rest of my life.
I don't follow Atkins at all, but I eat very low carb, and after 10 years
of protein in my urine, it's been gone since I began low carbing, and so
are my peripheral neuropathies and dyslipidemia. My DM has improved, not
worsened, over my decade of low carbing, and I retain a robust second
phase insulin response. My eye exams show absolutely no evidence of DM
damage. I have no microalbuminaria, virtually none, either.

I also am in agreement with Nicky & Susan. Since low carbing I have
excellent blood sugars and have reduced some meds and eliminated others. I
have also lost a few pounds - also good to reduce the effects of DM. No
other progression of DM. In fact when I see my Dr on the next visit I
expect to have a HBA1C of <5% so additional med reduction may be in my
future.
The key for me and my future is low carbing. I just need to stay on that
diet for the rest of my life.
