There is very likely a sub group of DMs who have pituitary problems leading to sodium excretion in excess.

Additionally, when I read up on the topic several years ago, I found that the use of salt restricted diets for hypertensives was associated with higher death rates.

I don't think sodium is the problem, I think insufficient potassium is; I recently posted an article about the high rate of aldosteronism that is responsible for hypertension in DMs.

After over a decade, my hypertension is gone with time released potassium by rx. My bp is rarely above 111/66. Usually, that top number is lower. In the doctor's office, it's 165/95, though, so I bring my meter with me to show them my home results and to test it against theirs. That's how good I feel about going to doctors. :-)
