Hi,
My father is 60 years old and has diabetic neuropathy. The pain in his
legs is really awful and his doctors have suggested that he should
have the nerves in his leg cut. He is wondering if there are other
options and what he can do for the pain other than cutting nerves. Are
there other options? Anyone else out there had nerves cut?

No one here can contribute much.
I had as similar problem around 15 years ago.
It was suggested I consider the nerve cutting
to relieve the great pain. We elected to wait a while.
It was a living hell.
I found MHD and some good people taught me
about diabetes. It was not available elsewhere.
I went on a VERY close blood glucose control
program. At first the pain was greater but then it started to
abate.
Today I do not have neuropathy pain unless I GET
CARELESS.
However I lost the left leg to osteomylitis later.
But the badly damaged leg is very near normal.
I suggest you do get an independent second
opinion preferably from a doc that does not
know the primary doc.
Addenda: I do get so tired of those that complain about testing.
It is the only tool we really have but the user must put out effort
To control the blood sugar I had to go to small bite eating and
tests and inject every three hours. Tough? Not nearly as tough as
the living in a damn wheelchair. and the pain that was
to the point I wanted to give up,
I have problems, so many but I can still be a nuisance here,
especially to the pompous.
Run out of options before you cut.
An Endo is preferable to a GP for diabetes.
Guy.

Wow Guy, thanks for your input. It was good to hear from you. I have
been worried for some time that my Dad's pain and problems were not
reversible and he was just suffering endlessly, and going downhill til
the last. I don't want him to get those nerves cut because it seems
very drastic. I don't like his GP either, so maybe I can convince him
to get himself a good Endo on his case. What he really needs though
are people to talk to who have the same problem he has, and also he
needs some diabetes education and I think a major change in lifestyle.
I am not sure how to get that put into motion though. I also live far
away from them so I can talk all I want, for example, but I can't go
over there often and tell him that stuff he has in the fridge is bad
news.
I know the issue since for a time I go to work, soak a towel
in liquid nitrogen wrap my feet and legs to be able to work.
But the pain means the nerves are stressed but alive.
I am far away and not qualified but do know
what and the only thing that worked or me.
It will be an ongoing pattern.
I just touched the leg that was
so bad. NOW it has feeling,
responds to heat At one time I
had a hole in the bottom where you
could insert the whole finger
When the other leg developed severe infection and
had to be removed , my heart tried to stop.
Went to St. Luke's for heart surgery and was
there for two months.
Came out they were adamant in fitting me with
an artificial leg. I felt bones cracking in the
remaining foot as they did the pep talk routine I
shut this game down and said the wheel chair
is all I need.
I am now 77 and do have other problems. But
still do active work planting and cutting trees.
Tell you what, Send me an e-mail and I might be of some
help. The posted e-mail is legit.
If you dad and my personalities fit. I might be of some help.
Docs can be part of a problem.
