Endo Shortage

I read once somewhere that as the "Boomers" age that a severe shortage
of endocronologists is expected to develope. It occurs to me now that
the crunch may be sooner and worse than anyone imagines. Paradoxicly,
this will occure because of good progress being made in the field of
diabetes. The current crop of medical students who are declaring
their areas of specialization have to be looking at the pace of
research in diabetes and perhaps concluding that a cure for diabetes
is on the horizon. This development may not manifest for 20 years,
but careers are a long-term decision. No med student wants to get
into a field where there are good prospects of a cure on the horizon.
The bread and butter of specialists is treatment, not cures. No one
wants to have to re-train for a new specialty mid-way through his
career.
The dangerous period will begin when developments in the research
labs result in a drying up of new doctors specializing in diabetes.
Anyone aware of any trends developing as of yet?
