I was diagnosed in 1987. That may not be as long as you, but for me it's
been half of my life so far. I've been pumping for 7 months now.

April 1987 - diagnosed Type 1 and put on 2 shots a day: Humulin NPH/R in the
morning and Humulin NPH in the evening. I had no insurance, as I had just
aged out of my father's coverage and they made no exceptions for full time
students.

1998 - finally got my own insurance and was able to see a doctor on a
regular basis. Started on Humalog before each meal, still using Humulin NPH
2x day. Still never went to an endo, relying on my PCP for all care.

March 2005 - finally went to see an endo as I had become hypo unaware and
was having many severe lows, starting in 2002. Endo put me on Lantus. It
made a big difference, not having NPH in my body.

April 2005 - met with the NP/CDE at the endo's office and she suggested the
pump. I got the pump the following week, and began using it in May.

How do you use slow insulin for meals? My days don't follow any set
schedule, and I've found that the pump is great for that. My diet isn't the
greatest, as I am very fond of carbs. Now that I'm pumping, and keeping a
log of what I eat, I have been cutting back some.
