Nov 15 news: About 150,000 ACCU-CHEK Aviva blood glucose meters, sold by Roche Diagnostics, have been recalled because of a potential electronic malfunction that will cause the meter to render itself inoperable or may cause it to show an erroneous result.
The replacement Aviva meter they sent me reads all over the place. It has read as much as 29% higher than a reading taken from the same drop at the same time on a new Advantage. Two readings from the same drop tested on the Aviva never are anywhere close.
Both my meters test within range with the control solution, but that is of little comfort when I have no way of knowing if I'm really at 83 (Advantage) or 107 (Aviva)!
However, since testing twice in a row with the Advantage is much more likely to yield similar readings than testing twice with the Aviva and since my old Advantage always matched the lab within a few mg/dl, I tend to trust the Advantage.
In short, even not recalled, the Aviva seems to be a meter to avoid!
