First, read here

Then tell the sister that you're testing to determine how the foods you
eat and the exercise you get affect your blood glucose readings. Get a
prescription for more test strips from your doctor, and explain to him
why. If you have to, pay for extra strips yourself.
You're the master of your own ship, not some disinterested third party
that you see twice a year. You'll probably be shocked with what you see
with regular after meal testing.
