Dr Andrew Wakefield was the lead author of the controversial study,
which suggested there may be a link between MMR and autism and bowel

The study, which was published in 1998, saw Dr Wakefield leave his NHS
job and become a pariah of the medical profession.

The study was retracted by the Lancet due to the many violations of
scientific & ethical protocols, lies, and omissions.

The retraction, straight from the source:

A good editorial, also from the main-stream media:

Following the judgment of the UK General Medical
Council’s Fitness to Practise Panel on Jan 28, 2010, it
has become clear that several elements of the 1998
paper by Wakefield et al1 are incorrect, contrary to
the findings of an earlier investigation.2 In particular,
the claims in the original paper that children were
“consecutively referred” and that investigations were
“approved” by the local ethics committee have been
proven to be false. Therefore we fully retract this paper
from the published record.

His BIG sin, making the claim that the investigations had been
approved by the ethics committee.

Perhaps it was approved and now someone is retracting? Could that
happen? YES, of course something like that could happen. ESPECIALLY
when MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars are involved.-

Wakefield could have provided the original approval of the ethics
committee, if there had ever been a ruling. These ruling are ALWAYS
written, since they protect the researcher. It is like insurance
against charges like this.

Since he never produced it, it clearly does not exist. Thus, he lied.
