Thanks for making my argument stronger. NM has 'slipped' to second
place out of 50 states for the lowest incidence rate for cancer in the
year 2004, the most recent SEER stats. I was relying on an earlier
SEER book. Arizona, which is also a state where peppers are a staple
for many residents, is #1, having the lowest cancer incidence of all
50 states.
So we have the #1 and #2 lowest states for cancer incidence are states
where peppers are eaten regularly by significant parts of the
population.
Thereby demonstrating that you don't know anything about either State.
Arizona has a lower per-capita capsicum consumption than NM by a huge
margin; the population here is almost 100% recent transplants from
the East and Midwest.
A quick check of the CDC for cancer mortality by state for 1999-2005,
sorted by increasing per-capita rate produces:
Utah 106.9
Alaska 112.7
Colorado 142.2
California 157.7
Texas 158.3
Georgia 166.1
New Mexico 166.4
Idaho 167.8
Hawaii 168.3
Arizona 177.6
Washington 183.2
Wyoming 183.6
Nevada 184.9
Minnesota 186.3
Virginia 190.5
Maryland 193.9
New York 195.6
North Carolina 199.2
Nebraska 199.7
New Hampshire 201.2
Illinois 201.4
Kansas 202.1
Michigan 202.5
Wisconsin 204.5
Vermont 205.2
South Carolina 207.7
Oregon 208.7
Connecticut 211.6
Indiana 213.1
Montana 214
Mississippi 214
New Jersey 214
North Dakota 214.7
South Dakota 214.8
Louisiana 215.6
Oklahoma 216.6
Massachusetts 219
Tennessee 219.1
Delaware 219.3
District of Columbia 220.3
Missouri 222.2
Alabama 222.7
Iowa 224.2
Ohio 224.6
Rhode Island 230.1
Kentucky 232
Arkansas 233.5
Florida 241.8
Maine 246.9
Pennsylvania 248.6
West Virginia 265.6
So how do Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, and Washington (none
more than 10% higher than New Mexico; Alaska and Utah
both dramatically lower) fit your scheme?
