Specialized Chiropractic Treatment Reduces High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure afflicts over 73 millions Americans and kills over
50,000 people a year. For one in three people suffering from this
condition, the traditional treatment is two pharmaceutical drugs
combined. The cause of high blood pressure is not known, however, a
recent study showed that specific type of chiropractic treatment can
reduce high blood pressure by the same amount as the two
pharmaceutical drugs. These findings are an important breakthrough for
alternative medicine.

The double blind study conducted at the University of Chicago showed
blood pressure drops of 17 points that lasted for the eight-week
duration of the study. The study was placebo controlled, and there
were no side effects from the procedure. Traditional pharmacy
treatment of high blood pressure requires the patient to take two
medications in order to obtain a drop of 17 points.

The type of chiropractic studied was called, NUCCA- National Upper
Cervical Chiropractic Association. Only 200 chiropractors are training
or certified in this method.

What is NUCCA?
NUCCA is upper cervical chiropractic. NUCCA chiropractors focus their
gentle adjustment to the upper regions of the neck, where the head
attaches to the body. This is were the nervous system first becomes
vulnerable to the stresses and strains of daily living. Spinal
misalignment in this area of nervous system can influence structure
and how the body balances itself in space as well as influencing input
to all areas of the body. Hence misalignment of the upper cervical
spine can lead to headaches, acute and chronic pain conditions in the
neck and back and a can thereby influence the functioning the the
organs and other systems in the body. Hence the influence of the
nervous system on the blood pressure. The atlas bone that the NUCCA
doctor adjusts, is used as a lever to bring the head and neck into
alignment. NUCCA doctors use very specific and specialized X-ray
views to determine each patients unique misalignment correction
vector. Follow up studies then provide both doctor and patient with
valuable feedback on the success of reducing the upper neck
misalignment.

Because the atlas is a freely moving vertebra, it allows the skull to
rotate, but can easily be injured or twisted out of place. Frequently
misaligned after falls, or whiplash, this point, just under the head,
is the connection between the body and the brain. This condition can
cause headaches, allergies, chronic pain, and now, it is indicated in
high blood pressure. Atlas subluxation complex can produce imbalances
throughout the spine and can cause lower back pain as well.

Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer, who
established the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa. Palmer was a
writer, lecturer and one of the first to use radio in the early part
of the Twentieth Century. He was a self-taught author of over 70
books. He wrote about what he termed "Universal Intelligence."

"What is the mission of Universal Intelligence? To build this world,
to keep it builded; to rebuild it when it dies; to keep this world
constantly shaping to its highest idealized form. To make, create, or
individualize itself into innate Intelligences. Innate Intelligence is
a sunbeam, a ray of light from a sum total of lights or sum total of
senses." http://www.aucco.org/palmerbj.html#Innate Daniel, or D.D. as
he was known, focused his intention on the whole spine, and his son,
B.J. (Barlett Joshua) became increasingly more focused on the
importance of the upper cervical spine.

In the 1940s, two chiropractors, Dr. John Grostic and Dr. Ralph
Gregory founded a branch of chiropractic that taught Grostic
Procedure, which focused exculsively on the upper cervical spine.
Their technique, called Orthospinology, was researched and taught from
1946 until 1964. The word orthospinology stems from the Greek words
orthos (straight) and spine (column). Because of the specific nature
of the adjustments, education in thie method involved instruction in
physics, mathematics as well as the regular medical sciences of
anatomy, physiology, etc. Dr. Gregory went on to refine the upper
cervical technique, and found Nucca in 1966.

Nucca chiropractic offers relief of suffering for many. This study,
and others that will certainly follow, provides an alternative
treatment modalities to the millions of Americans afflicted with high
blood pressure.
