The Seemingly Innocent Poison Making Its Way into Every Meal
by Donna Gates for BodyEcology.com
Statistics show that people are living longer yet our individual
health and the health of our children seem worse than ever. Sure we
live longer but obesity, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis,
cancer ADD and ADHD are on the rise.
While drugs, surgery, radiation and chemo allow us to live longer,
they certainly don’t hold the key to living BETTER.
The good news is that WE hold that key to our own wellbeing and to our
longevity. And more and more evidence is showing that HOW WE EAT is
perhaps the most critical factor determining the QUALITY of our life.
Have you seen the new commercials on television telling us that high
fructose corn syrup comes from corn, has the same nutritional calories
as sugar and is fine in moderation? (Really ... who are they
kidding???) This dishonest information about nutrition is working
against us. But understanding the energetic of food and knowing the
Seven Universal Principles in the Body Ecology Way of Life will always
lead you in the right direction.
The Principle of Step by Step tells us where start.
An excellent place to start would be to totally eliminate sugar from
your diet. Impossible? Not really. I did it years ago out of necessity
and you can to. Now it is easier than ever.
Sugar, as we all know so well, tastes great, but is actually a poison
in disguise. It literally saps our constitutional life force and
creates an acidic condition in our blood that sets the stage for an
endless number of diseases including the dis-eases of “old age.”
If you are a Baby Boomer, I realize that in the mind of every Baby
Boomer is the dread of growing old. That’s because we love life and we
love our children and we will remain thirty-something in our heart
forever. (Statistics show that Baby Boomers have an enormous appetite
for life and are in denial when it comes to growing old!)
So to meet your immediate goal of pushing back Old Father Time and --
even though sugar consumption is on the rise -- it must disappear from
your life permanently.
Sugar on the Rise
Can you believe it? With all we know about sugar being bad for you,
sugar consumption is still on the rise, increasing more than 28% since
1983.1
Even harder to believe is that the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) suggests a limit of 10 teaspoons per day of sugar
but offers no official daily recommendations. Most commercial yogurts
provide as much as 70% of the suggested recommendation of added sugar.
A Pepsi provides 103% and some packaged processed foods can provide
115%!2
So you can see that avoiding added sugar might seem pretty tricky
these days.
And it’s not just “sugar,” but other commonly used “sweeteners” that
contribute to the overall problem of low energy, early aging and
disease.
Sugar and Those Other Popular Sweeteners
Read labels carefully and you will find that most processed foods
contain sugar in one form or another. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate
made up of fructose and glucose. These two simple sugars join to
create sucrose.
These are only a few of the dozens of different descriptions for
"sugar:”
Sucrose
Dextrose
Corn syrup
Malt
Fructose
Glucose
Carbitol
Lactose
Evaporated cane juice
Concentrated fruit juice
Harmful Affects of Sugar and Most Sweeteners
America's (and other countries too!) addiction to sugar has created an
epidemic of health and immune problems including candida, vitamin and
mineral deficiencies, adrenal fatigue, diabetes and obesity.
Once you introduce sugar into your body, it’s easy to become addicted.
You may feel you are no longer in control of your body and it is like
a runaway horse. ALL sugars damage your health. They can make us
overweight, even obese. Sugar can cause us to become diseased and
reduce our lifespan.
Here are some foods and drinks that may seem “healthy” but contain too
much sugar:
So-called “energy bars” are loaded with sugar of some sort, which
means over time, they actually deplete your energy.
Raw Food treats (including raw chocolates) have become widely
available and obviously very popular in health food stores. There is
nothing healthy about them, even if they lead you to believe they are,
since they are sweetened with dates or agave syrup....sugar.
Most fruit juice and energy drinks are full of high fructose corn
syrup.
This has been linked to increased cholesterol levels, blood clots, and
impaired immunity.
Is the answer to give up sweets all together? Absolutely not! We all
NEED the sweet taste.
And in fact, we at Body Ecology teach that when your body becomes
balanced, the natural sweetness in foods like carrots, onions,
butternut squash, berries ( and certain other fruits) plus Body
Ecology’s grain-like seeds will satisfy your sweet tooth just fine.
But you can also get that sweet taste that you are looking for in
sugar in other healthier ways without the calories and negative side
effects of sugar!
How to Reduce or Eliminate Sugar – And Still Be Satisfied!
Here are some tips for satisfying your sweet tooth naturally and
boosting your energy and health at the same time:
Pay attention to your serotonin levels - Intense cravings for sugar
can often indicate a low level of serotonin...an important
neurotransmitter or brain chemical related to depression and even
constipation. To find out how to naturally boost serotonin read: 11
Powerful Tips to Boost Your Serotonin . Taking a supplement called
5HTP can boost serotonin levels and stop those cravings. But our
article offers even more excellent advice.
Choose healthy natural sweeteners - Two healing, medicinal and
delicious options are Lakanto and Stevia. Both are natural, zero-
calorie sweeteners that are delicious, yet don’t affect your blood
sugar levels or feed candida.
Choose the right fruits – We do allow some limited fruit in the
beginning stages of the Body Ecology Diet. As your candida symptoms
disappear and you are certain your inner ecosystem is on its way to
being established, you can add others.
Fruits to eat - Eat the very sour fruits like grapefruit, lemons,
limes, unsweetened cranberry juice, black currant juice, unsweetened
blueberry juice concentrate, fermented noni juice and pomegranate
juice. These juices are wonderful sources of antioxidants and are
great when you add them to a microflora-rich beverage like Young
Coconut Kefir. To make this sour juice taste sweet, simply sweeten it
with stevia or Lakanto.
Fruits to avoid - Avoid the sweet fruits (e.g., dates, bananas,
apples, pears, figs and melons) during the initial stage of the Body
Ecology program (also known as “stage 1”)
Consume fermented foods and drinks - One great benefit of fermented
foods and drinks is that they stop your cravings for sugar and
processed foods! They are also full of the beneficial proboitics that
keep your gut healthy, boost your energy and build your immune system.
So you get a triple health boost when you consume fermented foods and
drinks!
In fact, I feel certain that adding the “sour” taste of fermented
foods and drinks back into our diet will be crucial for ending the
current epidemic of obesity.
Bring sweetness back into your life – It is also true that we crave
sugary food when we are missing something sweet in our lives.
Sometimes we just lose direction and we need something fresh...a new
beginning or change...in our lives. Think about what you could add to
your life that will nourish or fulfill your spirit. Commit today to
finding out what makes your heart sing and you will feel more
complete!
It may seem like a minefield at first, trying to dodge all these
hidden sugars in your food today.
But when you begin following the Body Ecology Way, all your sugar-
evading worries disappear. You will find yourself eating foods that
are great for your body, your energy and your immunity. Embrace the
“sugar free” way of living today!
