Bush's message about stem cell research....

On other science and technology issues, Bush hailed the recent
development of stem cell-like cells from skin cells and said funding
"for this type of ethical medical research" would be expanded.
President Bush's much-anticipated mention of stem cells in last
night's State of the Union address isn't likely to change anyone's
mind about the research or his policies.
As you may have heard, scientists believe embryonic stem cells (ESCs)
may be able to cure everything from cancer to Alzheimers.
Unfortunately, getting them involves destroying an embryo -- and to
get personalized versions, you'd need an embryonic clone of yourself.
Critics say this is murder; supporters say that delaying potentially
life-saving research because of concern about pinhead-sized
blastocysts is what's really murder. President Bush has tried to walk
a line between the two, limiting federal research funds to ESC lines
created before August 2001. As a result, progress has slowed, though
pioneering work has still been done in non-federally funded labs.

I am on a research group with parents, doctors and scientist.
Two of the scientist on my group are involved in stem cell research.
I
want to share a conversation I had with one
about why we need embryo stem cells. Its very simplistic to
understand. This was a recent conversation.
Dr.>>>>>You don't even need to "fix" the cells. If you use donor
neuro-stem cells, they are already healthy anyway and don't need to
be
fixed. Stem cells do not carry all the auto-immune markers of other
cells, so they are not rejected like other transplants. At this
point, neuro-stem cells are grown in test tubes and don't even have
to
be donated per se.
Me>>>>Where do you get neuro-stem cells from?
Dr.>>>>you get them from embryos.
First we have to do the mice (that is *scientist on my group*
project). Then we have to do more mice. Then we have to do a
primate
somehow. Then a human. It will be a few years, but it might not be
too late.
Dr.>>>>>>>>>>>
Neither autologous, nor bone marrow, nor umbilical stem transplants
will really work, although they may help with certain symptoms.
Anything put into the bloodstream might have limited effects on
organs
and peripheral structures, but not on the root problem in the brain.
The stems will have to be normal, non-autologous, neuro-stem cells
and
they will have to be implanted directly into the brain. Any other
delivery method will yield limited results. If the stem cell
treatments work in mice and primates, we would have to do it in
humans
by putting a little catheter directly into the ventricles. This is
not going to happen any time soon, but might still be soon enough for
any of our kids. Retts was reversed in the Retts mouse experiment.
Fragile X was reversed.
Soooooooooo, Basically what Bush is funding for is NOT going to be
useful for just about EVERY disease that could be cured by stem
cells!
