Re: Anyone have personal experience w/ niacin?

Six months ago, at my 1st blood test, my total cholesterol was 289.
After adjusting my diet & exercising more for three months, I
confidently took another cholesterol test.  The result was 277. Hardly
a significant difference.  The doctor recommended Pravachol, a statin
drug.

Yesterday, I read info, seemingly from good authorities, atwww.cholesterolscore.com
that niacin can lower my cholesterol as well as Pravachol.

Given the difference in cost, which is extreme, is it possible that
niacin could be anywhere as effective?  Is niacin the equivalent of
snake-oil, or is it the best kept secret?

Feedback please.

I took no-flush niacin for a year (from GNC). 500 mg daily. I
didn't see any real change in cholesterol readings during that time.
I made the mistake of taking a statin (Crestor) drug for 3 months
until my research into statins convinced me statins are only for drug
company profits. Get a book called "The Cholesterol Myths" by Uffe
Ravnskov. Also look into a site called:

www.spacedoc.net

The site is run by a physician that worked for NASA and had bad
experiences with statins and began his own research into them. It
turns out that the drug companies developed statins a good while back
thinking that lower cholesterol was going to be the big thing. When
studies and tests started showing that cholesterol was not that
important to heart problems, they put on a big push and suddenly
trials and studies were all showing lowering cholesterol was critical
to stay alive! That is still the case and they are making billions
out of statins even though there are some independent studies saying
that lowering cholesterol is not that good for you.

There are plenty of resources on the 'net on the subject both pro
and con. Better to be an informed consumer than a guinea pig for the
big boys. All of whom will no doubt chime in on this. As a matter of
fact, the more arguments about these comments ought to point out the
possible value of an alternate viewpoint. Read the book mentioned
above. It's shocking what the drug companies have done with statins
and cholesterol.

It might also be worth looking into 'homocysteine' as another risk
factor for certain heart and artery problems.
