What is Dendritic Cell Therapy and why can it be used to treat both
early and Advanced stages of cancer?
· Dendritic Cell (DC) Therapy or Dendritic Cell is used to treat
cancer and other serious diseases including chronic hepatitis B and C
infection, HIV infection, and other autoimmune disorders.
· DC therapy represents a promising therapeutic approach for treatment
of cancer in advance stage (even in stage IV) as well as for
prevention of secondary cancer.
In case of cancer, DC therapy is an immune therapy which harnesses the
body's own immune system to fight cancer. The Dendritic Cell is an
immune cell whose role is the recognition, processing and presentation
of foreign antigens to the T-cells in the effector arm of immune
system. Although Dendritic Cells are potent antigen presenting cells,
they are usually not present in adequate quantity to allow for a
potent immune response. Dendritic Cell Therapy involves the harvesting
of blood cells (i.e. monocytes or CD 14 cells) from a patient and
processing them in the laboratory to produce Dendritic Cells. These
DCs (immature forms) are made to recognize the tumor antigen in the
laboratory and thereby matured. The 'mature' Dendritic Cells are then
given back to the patient in order to allow massive dendritic
participation in optimally activating the immune system through
generation of anti-cancer T-cell response.
Cases of Cancer, cured by Dendritic cell therapy by our centre:
Most of the patients opted for DC therapy trial treatment either after
the conventional treatment had failed and doctors had refused to treat
them further, or were in in-operable stage.
Glioma multiforme, Stage IV (A highly malignant tumor of brain). A
56 year old male patient has responded well to DC therapy. He was
operated and was receiving chemo- and radiation therapy but his
disease was progressing. He suffered memory loss, disorientation,
sleepiness, slurred speech, and swelling of rt. leg. After receiving
four vaccines doses he not only became oriented, alert, regained his
memory but also became clear in speech. He is stable, surviving for
the last one year, and leading a quality life. His CT and MRI confirm
the tumor to have shrunken and stable.
Gall bladder cancer, Stage III. The patient a 50 year old lady came
immediately after her surgery with removal of gall bladder. She is
symptom-free, leading a good quality life for the last one year and
gained 10kg weight. She is free of disease as confirmed by USG, CT and
biochemical assays.
Ovarian Cancer, Stage III relapsed after surgery and chemotherapy. A
58 year old lady has no sign of malignancy as proved by her USG and CT
after receiving seven doses of vaccine therapy. The patient is leading
a symptom free, normal quality life.
Chondrosarcoma, Spine Grade IV. A 46 year old male patient bed-ridden
and in extreme pain, taking Morphine 250 mg orally as well as through
skin patch, has responded extremely well. He is able to sit, stand and
walk. He stopped taking Morphine and no more uses patch for pain
control after taking 5 doses of DC vaccine. He is leading a normal and
good quality life and his CT scan indicates stabilization of disease
for the last one year of this therapy.
Lung Cancer, Stage IV, Non-small cell. A 65 year old patient after not
responding to chemotherapy opted for DC therapy and is doing well for
the last one year. All his clinical parameters have improved.
Stomach cancer, Stage IV, in-operable. A 45 year old male patient,
was operated for carcinoma stomach with involvement of duodenum and
esophagus. Due to the advanced disease the tumor was not removed. He
started receiving DC vaccines and his recent CT after seven months of
therapy show no progression of disease.
Cancer of Cheek, squamous cell carcinoma: A 70 year old lady
presented with large squamous cell carcinoma cheek received two DC
vaccines by local infiltration. Her tumor drained in the form of pus
by an opening in buccal cavity. She is able to chew her food and eat
her meals without difficulty.
