1. Celtic Plant Woad Fights Breast Cancer

The plant that was used by ancient Celts and Brits to make blue war paint to
frighten their enemies may become a powerful cancer-fighter in the
twenty-first century.

Italian scientists at Bologna University found that woad, a plant which
belongs to the same family as broccoli (the plant with the most recognized
cancer-fighting properties ) and cauliflower, produces twenty times the
amount of a chemical compound called glucobrassicin (GBS) that is suspected
of being the anti-cancer component of crucifer vegetables.

The researchers also found a way to boost the levels of GBS naturally found
in woad to almost 65 times the amount found in broccoli.

GBS has been shown to have anti-tumor abilities, particularly against breast
cancer. Women with high levels of estrogen are particularly at risk for
developing breast cancer, and GBS flushes out the cancer-causing chemicals
linked to estrogen.
