Jason, how about a new thread for you once a week, or once a month, or
something.

- CLOSING NOTE [2010-09-13 Mon 23:44] \\
Done.
** Plan
- Clean and Press 24kg (1-2-3) x 5.
- Easy Snatches 24kg for (2 dice) minutes 50-60% effort.
** Actual
- Clean and Press 32kg 5 singles.
- Easy Snatches 24kg for 9 minutes 84 total snatches.
** Notes
The cleans and presses went very well--especially considering
the fact that I was not actually planning on lifting the 32kg
bell today. I had a little time during the day, and so I
decided to test myself a bit. The first cleans and presses
went up easily, and one hour later a second strict set went up
as well. I had never been able to do more than a single strict
set in a day, so I was a little surprised. One hour later I
was able to do another strict set, and so I decided to simply
try and turn the clean and press single into a set of three
with each hand. The weight went up smoothly without even
needing a break between reps.
I think that means that I am ready for ladders up to 3. So I am
going to start using the 32kg bell for cleans and presses.
The snatches went considerably less well. I got started really
late, and I really felt like passing altogether. I did sets of
7 in each hand at the top of every minute for the first 5
minutes. I then skipped a minute, and finished with the last
14 snatches. I still had two minutes on the clock when I
packed things up. I could have done more, and I probably
should have done more, but I decided to take Pavel at his word
and just put in a 50% effort.
I really needed to have rolled a lower number today. I simply
did not have the heart to do snatches today.
I'm a little surprised that you're pressing the 32kg before swinging
it. Not that I'm an expert, but this seems backwards to me.
It's possible that I am reading ETK incorrectly, or that my goals are
mixed up and confused (or both). However, I do not see my goals for
the snatch and the presses as particularly related.
Pavel says that 200 snatches with a 24kg kettlebell in 10 minutes is
a good goal. So I am working towards 200 snatches with the 24kg
bell in 10 minutes. I am pretty sure that the book covers moving up
to a heavier kettlebell somewhere (I'll have to look when I get
home), but I am pretty sure that you aren't supposed to move to a
heavier kettlebell until you can handle a lot more snatches than I
currently can with the 24kg bell.
Pavel also says that being able to press a kettlebell that is roughly
half your body weight is a good goal. I *have* read the procedure
for moving up to a new kettlebell in the press. In fact, I have
read it quite closely. The basic idea is that you get to the point
where you can do 5 ladders of 5 with the current weight, and then
you test yourself with the new weight. When you get to the point
where you think that you can do 3 ladders of three on your heavy day
then you are ready to switch to a new kettlebell.
To be honest, until yesterday I thought that I was going to have to
bring a dumbbell into work so that I could work up to 32kg in the
conventional manner (adding weight incrementally). I believed that
doing 75 cleans and presses with each arm with the 24kg kettlebell
was a good workout in the, "do a hard thing daily" sense. But I did
*not* think that it was going to prepare me to make the jump to a
32kg kettlebell.
That isn't precisely true. I thought tons of presses with the 24kg
bell was going to help me make the jump to 32kg before I bought the
new 32kg kettlebell. Once I bought the 32kg kettlebell, and
actually tried to press it, I became very skeptical in a hurry. I
could press the 24kg kettlebell all day, but I was not even close to
being able to press the 32kg bell.
Fortunately, it turns out that I was wrong and Pavel was right. My
work with the lighter kettlebell did eventually translate into being
able to press the heavier kettlebell. I suppose I should not be
surprised that Pavel would know more about getting people to be able
to make progress with a kettlebell than I do.
So, right now I don't really have plans to swing or snatch the
heavier kettlebell. I can swing it, and snatch it too, but I am not
practicing that. I just do it to show off every once in a while.
I definitely wouldn't suggest snatching a bell until you can press it
comfortably for reps. But swings are another matter. When I got my
"heavy" kettlebell (20kg) the first thing I did with it was swings,
and that was before I could even press the 16kg. Now that I'm doing
the ROP I use the 20kg for swings and getups but press and snatch with
the 16kg. So if I were you I'd probably be swinging the 32kg on
medium and heavy days. OTOH, I'm not you and you're making really
good progress as it is, so don't take this too seriously.
Also, there are some assistance exercises on the Dragon Door website
that help with moving to a heavier press. The URL is
