While seeing if there were listings for cable crunches (there are
plenty), I ran across this on youtube:

Can anyone here do this? I sure as hell can't. Not yet anyway. <g>
I don't see the point of them; they certainly aren't for the abs as
nothing in the abdominal group is shortening. They also appear to
put
strain on the back.
Abs don't need to shorten, as you mean it here, in order for them to
do
good work stabilizing the midsection.
I have always been somewhat sceptical about these static ( Isometric)
exercises like 'the plank', which is very trendy, and which I think is
a waste of time. In my opinion they hark back to Charles Atlas and his
'dynamic tension'.
I believe that it is necessary for a muscle to be shortened against
resistance, through its whole ROM, for the exercise to give maximum
benefit and efficiency.
That's only true if it's what the muscle was designed to do . The
muscles under the rectus abdominis are designed to work in the way Om
and I have been suggesting. Contracted isn't quite the same as
shortened, and contracted is a better word here - a muscle needs to work
in order to get stronger.
As to resistance, just look at gymnasts.
Last but not least, benefit and efficiency are, indeed, in the belly of
the beholder. I never do crunches and, well, Pavel still likes to
introduce me to people by suggesting they punch me in the stomach. :)
