I don't see the point of them; they certainly aren't for the abs as
nothing in the abdominal group is shortening. They also appear to put
strain on the back.
Abs don't need to shorten, as you mean it here, in order for them to do
good work stabilizing the midsection.
The strain on the lower back results only from poor technique - the key
to preventing it is to lock the glutes at the end of the movement so
that the spine gets into a neutral and not overextended position.

I actually do a lot of something similar, which is reverse crunches on
the exercise ball ,while gripping the upright of the cross-over
machine. I use a dumbbell for overload and bend the knees while
raising the legs, bringing the knees to a point over the chest.
Very effective with crunches done in reverse, with dumbbell on chest
or behind head.
It's nice to post on topic without having some overbearing know-all
prick tearing one's input up for arse-paper just for the sake of it!!
