took some supplements in the am, but generally felt eating around
workouts was best. You seem to have a very scientific appprach to
nutrition, so I was curious.
Exactly what does your supplement schedule look like? What do you
take
during the fast and what during the intake window?
Keith, I'm really not in a position to recommend anything. My
supplementation is not geared toward fitness, and it's possible that
nutrition needs toward the health and the physical fitness may not
coincide.
I mean, think of "calorie restriction" practitioner vs. a runner who'd
be carbing up before a training session. Should we actually restrict
complete proteins, because methionine restriction prolongs life span
(probably through some relation to homocysteine). There is also a
different mechanism proposed by which proportion of "incorrect"
enzymes including those protecting DNA is minimized with protein
restriction.
Should we in fact train on an empty stomach, and then wait some more
to promote autophagy? You know, this way one may end up with
substantially more muscle 50 years from now :-)
I'm mostly trying to avoid malnutrition (vitamins and minerals go
there). Then I also take some of the "non-essential" supplements,
mostly those for which evidence of health benefit is overwhelming (but
I don't take any hormones or their obvious precursors). If I determine
that, say, vit K require bile for absorption, then it goes into the
"intake window", with most of the other fat-soluble stuff. But I use
a small amount of lecithin in the morning as emulsifier to mix in
powders (such as bilberry extract). But all in all, it's pretty much
the David Cohen style of supplementation (trying not to miss anything
but avoid things you're not too sure about).
Same here, fwiw. I take vitamins on an empty stomach in the mornings,
usually w/ some water and some coffee, and I take a few more w/ dinner.
An interesting list, IMHO, for those of us who tend to take a fair
number of supplements, might be the ones you consider most and least
important. I did just that for myself a month or two ago and cut out
the few at the bottom of my list, so far to no ill effect. Top of my
list:
- Healthy oils
- Probiotic
- Multi-vitamin
Others on my list:
- Potassium (keeps muscle cramps away)
- Ginkgo Biloba (doctor-recommended for persistent vertigo but not bad
for general health purposes, too)
- EstroX *(ingredients list below, Google for more)
- L-glutamine - 1 gr every AM, probably deluding myself that this helps
but I'm still taking it
Either/both of the last two above would be the next to go.
Recently dropped:
- Siberian Ginseng
- Green Tea Extract
* "made with ... flavones, indoles, herb extracts and cofactors with
