Try further north in California, or even Oregon or Washington. That's another alternative we've been talking about. If we don't go back to
Texas I'd prolly stay in CA. I went through a lot of time, money and anxiety
to take/pass the bar exam here, so I have a lot invested in this damn state.
If you had to pick a city in northern CA that wasn't too crowded or
expensive, but had lots of natural beauty and was reasonably close to a
populous area, what would it be?
You'd have to explore a bit and see. ;-)
I've not lived in California now for 25 years.
I'd say close to Oregon and North of Sacramento.
How about in OR?
Areas near Coos Bay, or closer to Washington state near the Olympic
penninsula. Virgin rain forest up there.
Scenes like this one:

That is a pic I took a few years ago when we were there on vacation.
That is Washington on the coast.
Here is another taken by a friend that lived up in that area:

But of course you have to like that kind of scenery. ;-)
Helps that it's within spitting distance of the beach too.
North Oregon in the more forested area is one of the most beautiful
places on earth.
We have friends who moved from Houston to Bend and we're wanting to check
that out. Dunno what part of OR that is but I hear it's nice.
Best advice? Take a nice driving vacation and check it out. A couple of
three weeks would work. Lots of camping available to save money.
Austin is not so bad, but it's terribly crowded also and the traffic sux.
The South Coast has it's hurricane issues.
Yeah, I was in the eye of Hurricane Alicia in 1983 (Cat 3). Was scary but
kinda fun. Been on the cusp of many many others.
Fun? <lol>
Oh I DO love Texas, don't get me wrong! But I live in the Hill Country.
The ocean is about a 2 hour drive.
Hill Country is great. Are you a Kinky fan?
Yes.
I heard that his very first run
for political office was for a justice of the peace post in Kerr County. One
promise in his platform was to keep Kerrville from going to war with
Fredricksburg. He lost.
He also ran for Governor and lost.

I'm sure he will continue to make waves here.
You know you live in Texas when you measure the distance to various
places by the number of hours rather than miles. <g>
Hope the fires are nowhere near you!!!
We're in OC. The closest one was about 25 miles away, near Irvine. Arson,
still hasn't been caught. There was a thin layer of ash everywhere a
coupla
days ago.
We used to live up above Lancaster in the Bouquet canyon area.
We drove through there this summer.
Lancaster... Welcome to hell.
110 degree dry heat.
Kinda like Vegas. <g>
