Well, the controversy I'm referring to is that some people say whey
helps you build muscle better and has no side effects (unless you're
lactose intollerant) and that soy doesn't build muscle as well and can
give you "female features" as a side effect. Then some people say
whey is just overpriced because it's more popular and that soy does
the same thing only it's cheaper and it also has added benefits (and I
don't really understand this part or what it's all about) when it
comes to antioxidants or something like that.
Anyway, I'm just confused. I'm a noob at this whole weight lifting
thing and would just like someone to help me understand the difference
and point me in the right direction. I just don't know what to think
at this point. I'm leaning towards soy at this point, but mostly just
because it's half the price.
Like I'd said, there's been no proof that soy enhances "female
features." Put it this way: you're much more likely to get those
female features using steroids than eating soy.
I haven't checked out prices for soy, but whey's not been too
expensive. I use Supplement Direct's 100% whey, and it was very cheap
the last time I bought it. I also use Optimum Nutrition's Pro
Complex, which isn't too expensive from allstarhealth.com. If you
don't treat them as meal replacements -- which you shouldn't -- five
pounds of whey should last a month. ON's Pro Complex is $45 for a
five-pound tub; that ain't exactly expensive. Supplement Direct's no-
frills whey is even cheaper.
Don't worry; the main thing is to lift hard, eat right, and rest
generously. You should be really looking at real, fresh whole foods,
anyway. Protein powders...I'm still not sure if they really work, but
one thing everyone -- and I mean *everyone,* which is amazing --
agrees with is that fresh whole foods are best for nutrition.
