Its possible to go beyond shoulder level without discomfort, but after 60
degrees or so, the DB should be rotated in such a way that the palms face
the ceiling when you are at 120 degrees. From that point, you can actually
"fininsh" the movement and end with arms vertical.

Problem is, doing it in such a way makes it impossible to go heavy.

For laterals, a limited ROM, one arm at the time, is best to build mass.
