The politically correct, revisionist history, view of the creator of "Star
Trek" is that of a peace loving pacifist who created a vision of the future
of all humans living in harmony, exploring the Universe, making friends with
all the aliens (for Kirk, really good friends with the hot female aliens).
But years ago, Gene Roddenberry gave us what I call "The Prescription" for
dealing with uncivilized, barbaric, Dark Ages, savages. Roddenberry
understood the nature of evil, and how to deal with it.
I remember that the episode impressed me even back in 1967. I was young and
politically naive, but something about it was profound, and I always
remembered it. Now, with Iran in the news, and Tony Blair and George Bush
wringing their hands, fretting about what to do, let's remember Warrior
Roddenberry and his wise advice.
"A Taste of Armageddon" aired February 23, 1967. Kirk, Spock, and a few
others are being held hostage by the high Council of Eminiar 7, a planet
with billions of inhabitants. In his last transmission to Scott, in
temporary command of the Enterprise, Kirk orders General Order 24, and is
then cut off.
A few minutes later, Scotty contacts the High Council, and gives "The
Prescription":
"This is the commander of the USS Enterprise. All cities and installations
on Eminiar 7 have been located, identified, and fed into our fire control
system. In one hour and forty five minutes, the entire inhabited surface of
your planet will be destroyed. You have that long to surrender your
hostages."
Roddenberry was a wise man, indeed.

Might not work in Iran.
We are not dealing with "sane" people.
Just like it would not work in Iraq.
Insurgents that use guerilla tactics cannot be reasoned with. :-(
But, it would be a cool idea none the less.
