I'm a 30 year old male and I used to gain easily until
about 5 years ago, when I came down with hypothyroidism.
With thyroid replacement pills, my doctor finally has my
thyroid back to normal levels but now I'm left with low
testosterone. From what I gather, apparently there's
some kind of relationship between the two.

Rich, Im sorry I can't provide any help or answers for you,
but I've suspected for a while that I am suffering a similar
fate as you. Did you ask your primary care doctor for these
tests to be done ??

I have thyroid medical issues in my family on both sides, I
think it would be very wise for me to get these tests done.

My doctor ordered TSH for the thyroid and I ordered testosterone
myself. Going to check DHEA next. Does anyone know what
the difference is between DHEA and DHEAs? Is that "serum"?
My doctor won't order it and my lab only has DHEAs. Thanks.

I just picked up _The Testosterone Syndrome_ by Eugene Shippen, M.D.
and William Fryer. The book is copyright 1998 while Shippen was an
internist in Reading, Pennsylvania - about 80 miles from my doorstep.

You asked about the difference between DHEA and DHEAS. According to
Shippen's book (page 169 of the softcover edition), DHEAS is, "a
standard test for measuring levels of the adrenal hormone, DHEA"

I found it interesting, too, that Shippen stated that the notion of
normality, wrt T levels, is virtually meaningless. Shippen offered that
your so-called normal level of testosterone, "probably is somewhere
between 300 ng/dl and 1000 ng/dl, but no one can say where in that
range it lies. You may be somewhat too low at 600 ng/dl, or you may be
quite adequate at 450 ng/dl. By nature, you may be a high-testosterone
male or a low-testosterone male, and, without those baseline levels
taken in youth, which you almost certainly don't have, no one can tell
for sure."

Obviously since you can't gain muscle mass "no matter what" and your
total testosterone level is 231 ng/dl (nanograms per deciliter of
blood) you'd do well to find a doctor who'll actually take your
concerns seriously.

Might be interested in the words at the other end of the following link
as well.

Best of luck. Please post a follow-up, Richard (and Yabahoobs, too).
