Hi I was wondering if anyone is using an EMS machine, how well they

Thanks.

Are you paralysed? Have an injury that needs physio?

I had surgery on my neck ACDF (anterior cervical disectomy with fusion,
titanium brace) c5-7. Cords were compressed on two levels deforming it
on
one level. I am still in allot of pain and its been almost 3 years post
op.
My posture is getting worse as my back is getting weaker. I lost allot
of
muscle size and wish I could hit the gym. Physical therapy makes the
pain
worse as did osteo treatment. I was hoping a machine like this may
possibly
work. I have the TENS unit but all that does is massagge the muscle and
feel
good for perhaps 10-20mins then the pain comes on. I am in pain
management
and as a matter of fact tomorrow getting more botox injections. Anyway
if
anyone can help please. Thanks!

I've read Ari's in a tight spot, but what scares me more than death
almost is what you're dealing with - pain that does not go away. What
does your pain management involve? OxyContin in there anywhere?

Hi Curt thanks for responding. I am on two types of oxycodine. One 5mg
that I take 8 a day is supposed to be instant and the other is 30mg
(3pills*10) timed release every 8hrs 3x a day. I also take Fentynal
patches of 150mcg, Motrin varies cut back from an ulcer, botox
injections, and trigger point injections. I was using a heating pad so
often that I burnt the bloodvessels in my skin causing a strange dark
brownish look to a considerable part of my back. I no longer use it
although it helped the muscle pain. Lidodcaine patches helped me sleep at
times but the V-A no longer issues them so now I am back to many
sleepless nights. I am scheduled for acupuncture and anesthesia pain
management next month. I don't know what else to do this is going on 3
years post op and 3.5yrs since the actual injury, oh and anti depressants
from all this so at least now I am a happier person with excruciating
chronic pain lol.

Some antidepressants can actually help chronic pain and are used in its
treatment. There are several usenet support groups, and you might want to
poke your head into alt.support.arthritis as we often get people there who
have had various and assorted spinal fusion surgeries as well as
degenerative disc diseases and spinal stenosis problems. There's a wealth
of experience over there. I have bad reactions to oxy* painkillers and
fentanyl (ever have every muscle in your body cramp up from the xyphoid
process down while dealing with a dozen fractures around or below that
level? not the sort of thing one does twice hehe) and other opiate
painkillers cause less severe reactions which can lead to other
complications, so I can really only take a couple of tylenol (called
panadol over here) a day mixed with a low grade synthetic painkiller that
I don't have bad reactions to yet. One of the first things they'll ask
over at alt.support.arthritis is 'what doctors are you seeing?', as in are
you seeing a doctor for pain management other than a surgeon? They'll also
ask if you've gotten a second (or third) opinion about treatment and if
they were all in accord. Also regarding the antidepressants, there are
some that can be used to assist sleeping, too. I wonder if there's a
common one that can be used for all three: sleep, depression, and pain
management?

Back to the topic of the EMS, I'm sure you already know this but do be
careful if you plan on using this on your trapezius muscle. It's
attachments are around the area of your injuries, and I'd be worried about
making a bad situation worse without proper supervision to start out with
(and a pain journal to watch for increasing pain associated with ongoing
use of the machine).

Regards,

Ari

Hi Ari allot of good advice thank you. One of the anti depressents
(venlafaxine?) I was on was more specific for pain but I had allot of side
effects such as dizzyness, blurry vision, and difficulty urinating. So now I
am just taking generic Zoloft. I had gone for a second opinion and will try
to have the surgeon who performed the surgery give another himself since he
is out of network from the V-A I have to get special permission to see him
and have it covered. I wish there was an easier way for all of us pain
sufferers but it seems that any simple task we have becomes an obstacle
whether its sleeping, sometimes getting dressed or taking a shower. Oh funny
thing you reminded me of with the ems trap thing was during the botox
injection the other day. I was stuck with needles about 80 times from the
center of eyebrows 4x each side, above eyebrows 4x each side, hairline 4x
each side, by temple 4x each side, in scalp 4x each side, back of neck 4x
each side, 4 different places 4x each side in trap. On two of the trap
injections on rightside were my pain was dominant, my left leg started
shaking violently. I have no idea why but Doc said cause I was nervous, does
that make sense? I didnt feel nervous just to much pain. When they finished
one of the Doctors asked me how I felt and I told her like I got in a fight
with a bee hive lol. Heres to better days for everyone. I hate posting this
stuff in this group its really meant for people keeping fit. I just was
hoping someone else may have used an EMS and can recommend one.

Nick
