Re: cheaper stop gap benches

It's not the strapped for cash bit that bugs me, it's your repeatedly posting pieces of crap equipment that the more experienced people here have told you are inappropriate for your uses. You just keep repeating yourself until you get the answer you want, like a child nagging their parents for a new toy.

I'd like to get a Body Solid Pro rack with chin bar, dip handles, and a bloody good bench, plus some new weights. That would be the ideal, but it's not an option, so I'm looking at compromises.

I've been getting along for 8.5 years with a rack very similar to the one I posted for you. It's made by BodySolid, but I wasn't able to find its equivalent for you in the UK. You do not need the pro rack, and buying one of those little all-in-one things that you keep posting is a waste of your limited funds.

Besides money, the other big constraight is space. My girlfriend does not like the sound of a power rack nocking about in our spare room.

Then you need to explain to her that the power rack is necessary to keep you, and the room, safe. Barbells go through walls very easilly if there's a mishap (a mishap that could have been prevented with the use of appropriate equipment). More importantly, though, is your safety. If she doesn't get this, then try explaining it to her in different words. The equipment you've been suggesting is not safe for someone training alone if you're going to be using weights that are heavy for you or going anywhere near failure (intentionally or not).

I know that a bench takes up as much room in terms of a footprint, but it's the sheer height of a rack, and the way it would impact on the room, that she doesn't like. And she pays the rent.

She needs to consider your safety. If that's not important to her, then perhaps it's time to reevaluate your committment. Injuries don't always heal right.

And no, for reasons that I won't go into here, it is not really an option for me to join a public gym, cheap or otherwise.

I have thought about the rack you have pointed out, so irrasibly, but there is one problem. By the time you add on the cost of a bench, you've gone beyond my budget of about £200-250. That's why I discounted it.

You don't even need a bench. The bench you'd use for what? One exercise: the bench press. This is not a necessary movement! A power rack and a barbell with some weights are all you need until you can save up for a bench. I'm certain you could even find a used flat bench second hand, and that would fit into your budget. Want me to see if I can find one for about what you want to spend, new?

The reason I thought the combo bench I linked to earlier might be a good thing, is because I am not very advanced at this stage. I cannot squat a great deal,

It's all relative: heavy for you may not be heavy for me, but it's heavy enough to hurt you without the proper equipment.

My biggest concern here is that you're going to come back in a month with a problem that would have been avoided by just getting a rack in the first place. I'm serious when I say that the bench can wait. Do you already have a barbell and weights?

Cheers,

Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:
