Are any of you using LCD Computer Monitors? It seems they are the
latest thing because I see few CRT monitors anymore. I still have a
CRT and am happy with the picture, but I could use more desk space.
Do they have as good of a picture as a CRT? It's hard to compare in
the stores when they dont have any CRT monitors to compare to.

You're a little late. LCD monitors have been popular for years because
of their space savings and their energy savings. In fact, I think they
will soon begin to fade in popularity in favor of LED monitors. Apple
started using LED displays in their laptops and iMacs about 6-12
months ago. (I am using one to type this message). Apple recently
introduced a line of stand alone LED displays and a 17" laptop with
an LED display. Apple tends to lead the industry in these sorts of
trends.

As for picture quality, some insist that CRTs offer better picture
quality and a wider color range than LCD displays. The choice of a
computer display depends on personal preference and how you intend to
use it. Someone who just wants to surf the web, check email, and work
on some home videos or snapshots has different needs then a
professional photographer or video editor.

Stop by a good computer store in your area and decide for yourself,
although you will probably have a hard time finding any CRTs there to
compare to.

I have 23" Apple Cinema Display at home on my desktop computer and a
30" Apple Cinema Display in my office at work. Both are LCD displays.
I get complements on the display at work all the time and questions
on how I talked management into buying it for me, but that's a
different story. I like them both, but the LED display on my new
MacBook Pro laptop is much better; its brighter and shows a lot more
details than I ever expected when I look at the photos I shoot.

Other things. I was told that any LCD tv will work as a computer
monitor. Is that true? If so, it would mak more sense to get a tv
so I can use it for both.

I don't know about that. Just look at the box the TV comes in or the
TV itself. If the TV has a VGA port, it should work as a computer
monitor. It will also work as a computer monitor if it has a DVI or
HDMI port, but you need to look at your computer and see what kind of
video output ports it has.

I was also told that these LCD monitors have a "lightbulb" behind the
screen, which often burns out, and I guess they are very costly. If
I have to spend $50 or $100 or more each year for a bulb, I am not
sure if I am willing to do that. My CRT monitor is 7 years old and
has never needed anything except the electric to power it. I also
heard that LCD monitors and TVs use more electricity, and since my
electric bill is too high now, that is another concern.

LCDs are like light bulbs; there's nothing behind them though.

Wrong, they do have backlights.

They are liquid and they do eventually wear out, but it takes a very long
time; probably about as long as the cathode ray tube in a CRT takes
to wear out. Your CRT is like a light bulb too, you know. My LCD
display at home is around 4 years old. I preserve it by using the
energy saver on my computer to turn it off (no screen saver) when I
am not using it. I do the same with the 2 year old LCD display in my
office. I have never had any issues with either display, but if I had
the money, I would replace them both with an LED display now.
