:I get fed up this time of year. I go into stores and they all ask for
: donations at the checkout. Lets put it this way. I donate all year
: long to a charity that I believe in and trust. I do not celebrate
: christmas. I am an atheist and the xmas holiday means nothing to me.
: I also do not donate to anything I do not know about.
:
: So I go to this one store to buy some toilet paper or something and
: they keep asking me to donate a toy to the local children. They get
: really pushy too. Today I donated. I told them I am a pedophile and
: I would donate an hour's worth of use of my penis for any boy or girl
: who wants to play with it. I explained that my penis is my favorite
: toy, and some child will love to play with it.
:
: Its funny how quickly they refused my donation. Maybe they will stop
: bugging me for donations the next time I shop there too.....
I'm a foster grand parent (we've taken the classes, had the back ground
checks etc but don't house kids in our home and are not compensated for what
we do). We are also (pro bono) Santa and Mrs. for a lot of non-profits
groups. (check out www.santa-ameirca.org for a bit of what else we do)
There is nothing more heart breaking than to be receive a left handed
'reminder' that Santa forgot a kid's brothers and sisters 'last year'.
(perhaps I should mention that the kid asked nothing for himself)
You are perfectly welcome to the Bah Humbug roll if that suits you but you
might consider doing something out of the ordinary. I've made it a practice
to put something in the Salvation Army kettle each and every time I pass
one. Not as much as I would like as I'm retired on SSA disability but
something none the less.
As to why: Long time back (near 40 years) I lived in New Orleans. My
friends and family were engaged in rescue work where one of the levees was
breached. (9 foot of water in the homes).
Been at the game for over 24 hours with only brief rest breaks. Stopped on
one of the levees to take a break at a canteen tent. Was 'offered' a stale
cup of coffee and then asked to pay a dollar. No money no coffee so we went
away with nothing.
Lady in one of those god awful Salvation army uniforms came by and invited
us to her group's tent.
When we explained we had no money the lady (with a smile) explained they
were not here for money but to help those who were in need (which include
those that were helping as well). we went to her tent anticipating a cup of
stale coffee and received a complete HOT meal along with a glass of ice tea
(real ICE!). further we were offered blankets and the use of some of their
benches to take a much needed cat nap.
Religious groups take up the slack and most offer their assistance without
reservation.
I would venture you'd be better served to polity decline and go on down the
road. You may only need help once in your life time, the question comes
"which once?"
