That sounds like it would be illegal for the wrong party to
cash the check. At that point, one would have to question
what type of identification the bank used. Since it would
be the bank's mistake, they should be on the hook for the
money.

The company lost the check. It's their problem, not yours.

days. After that time, if the check hasn't appeared, then they can request a
replacement without penalty to you or a late payment notation.
