The company lost the check. It's their problem, not yours.

Wrong. The bill still must be paid, even if it's their mistake.

If they have admitted that they lost the check, it's their problem for 90 days. After that time, if the check hasn't appeared, then they can request a replacement without penalty to you or a late payment notation.
