Re: Do you consider this software licensing practice ethical? I am furious!

Perfectly legit practice, especially since it's printed clearly on
their website. If you don't like the agreement, then don't agree
to it.

You consider having this information in the "System Requirements"
and at the end of a FAQ "printed clearly" on the website?

That's my biggest complaint- I think that information should be
listed alongside the product name.

Stick with me for a few paragraphs...

If I could only run a program 50 times I would expect that
information to be listed alongside the title of the program when I
was purchasing it. For instance, "50 executions of EQ6..."

LIKEWISE, if I can only install a program a fixed number of times
on a formatted hard drive I would expect that information to be
listed alongside the title of the program as well.

This is an interesting....

When discussing this topic with software developers (mostly on IRC)
and IT professionals, I tend to get responses like "yea, that's
B.S." Here onmisc.consumers, the perspectives seem to be split down
the middle. Some of the people responding clearly don't understand
how the activation policy works entirely but I'm surprised to see
as much acceptance of it as there is.

Maybe Microsoft has simply softened everyone up to the point that
anything goes?
Maybe all software will be sold this way one day and consumers
will just get used to looking for a number printed in 6 point font
on the back of the box to have an idea of what they're purchasing?

Or maybe you are having hysterics about what no one else does.

Good chance. Would you be concerned in the least if all software was
licensed this way?

Nope, because I normally do use a repair install or a restore point
if the OS install does go pear shaped, essentially because that
doesnt lose all your settings and installs and is a hell of a lot
easier to do than a clean reinstall of the OS and all the apps.

And we arent going to see all software licensed that way, its only seen
with EQ6 because someone has some rather silly ideas about how likely
it is that quilters will be attempting to pirate that particular software.

We've always seen some quirky approaches to minimising piracy that
never to take off and get adopted by everyone producing software.

EQ6 can get away with it essentially because you cant just make an obscene
gesture in their general direction if you dont like their policy and use someone
else's quilting software that has what you regard as a better licensing policy.

And you never get enough interested in pirating it to see anyone bother to
do an end run around the protection system like you see with MS products.
