My experience a few years ago with CFL's were that they didn't last as
long as advertised, the light color was ugly, they sometimes buzzed, and
sometimes didn't fit. From the three bulbs and two brands tried the past
two days, not much has changed.

Yesterday I bought a 75 watt equivalent (uses 19 watts actual) soft white
color CFL at Home Depot. The brand is n:vision and cost $6.97. From the
website it appears it's only sold at Home Depot:

It's an ok bulb for my desk lamp. The color is rather orangish though, my
desk and office have an orangish cast. From reading their website, a
daylight temperature is really what's needed for reading.

I went to Walmart earlier today. They were selling (2) GE CFL's for the
same price as the one n:vision. So I bought the 2-pack in a daylight 6500K
temperature. Brought it home and found they won't fit in my lamp! The
base is too wide for the harp in my desk lamp. I took off the harp and
shade just to see what the color looked like. Yuck, 6500K is really ugly.
And it didn't seem that bright either, even though it's supposed to put out
as much light as a 75 watt incandescent. Oh well, they go back for a
refund.

Then I went back to Home Depot and bought another n:vision, since the base
seems to fit my lamp. I got the same power rating but in their "bright
white" color temperature, which is the middle temperature they offer. Got
it home, put it in the lamp, and I'm hearing a really annoying loud buzz.
It doesn't go away either. The first n:vision didn't have this buzz and
the GE's didn't buzz either. The color isn't as orangish but I just can't
live with a lamp buzzing all the time. So this one goes back also. Why do
these things buzz? Is there a transformer inside?

See what a pain CFL's are? At least with the GE Reveals and soft white,
there's no buzz and you always know what the light is going to look like.
My advice for consumers is to stick with incandescent lightbulbs. They may
not last as long but the light they produce looks so much nicer than CFL.
CFL = BAD

I agree with all you said. I'll add to that the fact that in cold
weather they take forever to get bright. I had them in my garage but
finally removed them. WOrse yet, I have had two of them literally go
up in smoke, along with sparks. One was a GE, I am not sure what the
other was. At one time I had them in almost every fixture on my house
and garage. As they die, I am not replacing them, just using regular
bulbs again. Their life span is not even close to that listed on
their packages, some last less than regular bulbs. I am not impressed
with them at all. The older straight (horseshoe shaped) ones lasted
much longer. These spiral ones are junk.
