I just heard on the tv news that Google is going to buy
doubleclick.net, which if you dont already know, is one of the biggest
spam sites on the internet. A very large portion of the ads on
websites comes from doubleclick. As soon as I heard this, I removed
Google from my list of search engine links. Consider this a boycott
against Google. Google started out as a great search engine, but they
have been going downhill for the last few years. Their search results
cater to the sites with the most ads which are always placed first, as
well as every link possible for ebay. I have been very displeased
with Google lately, and rarely used them anymore. But after hearing
this, I will not use google at all anymore.
I nuked Google as my default home page months ago. It was one
of the best online decisions I ever made. Using the internet is a
whole lot more productive and MUCH less irritating now.
But Google is just one relatively major symptom of the actual
problem: a concerted effort to convert the world's greatest tool
for two-way communication into another version of a one-way
Home Shopping Network. A concerted response to fight this
As much as ads are irritating, unlike spam, at least they generate
some revenue for the site they are on.
OTOH, e-mail spammers take a big *** in your e-mail box and run,
contributing nothing whatsoever to
the internet. I agree that some of the ads are really intrusive,
especialy some of the newer flash ads
that actualy move *over* the page you are viewing and block it!
Companies who do annoying *** like that
need to be sent the message that stunts like that are completely
unacceptable. However, a simple banner ad
even if it's animated (but not seizure inducing. Ad companies need to
watch out for this too) is no problem
for me, and I'd rather deal with banner ads, then to have to pay to
access web sites, or not have the sites at all.
