Then call them and report back here what they tell you.
I will bet that it will be just what I was told two years ago
when I called them after a Circuit City here in CA wouldn't
accept my CC without a picture ID. They told me then that as
long as State law didn't prohibit it (and CA law allows the
checking of ID), then it was OK with them. Two years later and
Circuit City still won't take a CC without ID.
Not true, Ernie.
I am not lying. I did complain to MC about CC requiring
ID about 2 years ago and that is what I was told.
I don't usually shop at CC because they are out of my way but
last Saturday I purchased a car CD player from the San Mateo CC
($30 cheaper than Best Buy) and they refused my Master Card
without seeing my drivers license.
That is a fact as of 5 days ago at the San Mateo Circuit City.
I had the same problem with Circuit City and they no
longer require ME to show ID. In fact, I got a very nice letter
from corporate and a $75 gift card.
And when I shop at Macy's and they ask, I will refuse. And if
they persist, they will be getting a call from their merchant
bank.
Then I'll dig out the letter and give you a name
to call and you too can get the $75 gift card.
You are asking for trouble giving up more information
about yourself than necessary in any financial transaction.
Mindless paranoid fantasy.
You realize that if I have your name, address and credit card
number (with the security code on the back) I can order whatever
I want online.
And it can only be delivered to that address.
No - not true. I have had all sorts of things delivered to other
addresses - flowers for Mother's Day most recently to my mother-in-
law.

Plenty of operations will only deliver to the card holder's address
without further security checks, so you claim that you can order
whatever you want online is a lie

Look Rod - I do this all the time. I am on the road a lot and get
things delivered to a variety of addresses. I've had a laptop battery
delivered to a hotel in Hong Kong via FedEx. I did 90% of my
Christmas shopping on line and had things mailed all over the world
using my credit card. This is not new or novel.

Look Johnny, plenty of operations wont deliver to other than the
address that belongs to the account without extra ID, so you
'anything I want' is just plain wrong, and all you have to do is deny
that you authorised that transaction to get to reversed anyway.

and you're protected by the
card liability warranty anyway with the rest. Just deny that you
ever authorised the transaction and the merchant that is stupid
enough to ship without any ID check gets to wear the fraud.

The online merchant has my home address and the 3-digit security code.

See above.

It is not about protecting Circut City - its about protecting
yourself.
Nope, its about making it harder for a thief to use a stolen card.
It does nothing to protect ME.

Wrong, any reduction in the rate of fraud reduces the prices you get
to pay. In this case the prices that Macys charges you for what you
buy because
they dont get to wear more fraud than they need to by checking ID.

It does nothing to protect ME.

It does a lot to protect YOU against fraudulent transactions
that only YOU get to pay for in the prices and charges YOU pay.

Why should I give some clerk at Macy's the opportunity
to learn more about me than is necessary to protect me?

Because that reduces what fraud costs Macys
and so the prices you get to pay.

No it doesn't.

Yes it does.

As you pointed out, cloning cards is easier than getting a fake ID.

Irrelevant to the thieves that dont use Macys because they require a govt photo ID.

Want to go ahead and post your name, address, and credit card number?

If you're that mindlessly paranoid about those details, get a
govt photo ID that doesnt expose those details to the store clerk.

There is no such thing.

Of course there is. And even someone as stupid as you should be able
to work out how to cover the details you dont want the clerk to see too.

Lot less effort than chucking a tantrum every time a store demands ID

I get apologies

No you dont with Macys, you get told that you dont get to do the transaction.

and protect my identity - you play sheeple.

Nope, I dont get any undesirable consequences from showing my ID when requested
and get to pay lower prices because they get less fraudulent transactions.

You try refusing to show your ID when you fly, and you will get to walk.
