I am looking for a good umbrella. Ideally it will be large, strong,
and light weight. What I mean by strong is that it will resist wind
pressure, the kind of wind that tends to reverse collapse an
umbrella. That strength is probably the most important
characteristic. Besides its normal uses, it's going to be used as a
wind catcher (a light duty sail). Any suggestions about merchants,
brands, or specific models would be appreciated.

I am no expert, but who is? I have not tried anywhere near enough
umbrellas to consider myself well informed in umbrellas, but my
experience says that if you want to keep dry in wet weather, a good rain
coat works far better than any umbrella. I have had way too many
umbrellas get damaged in windy weather to make them worthwhile. I have
had expensive umbrellas fail on me a day after I bought them so now, I
just buy the cheapest umbrella I can find and I keep one at home, one at
work, and one in my car for those times where its raining, but not windy
and not raining enough to make it worthwhile to wear a rain coat, but in
heavy rain, the best way to stay dry is a good raincoat.

Raincoats are effective under certain circumstances but the reality of
it is that in the business world, lugging around a raincoat isn't
practical. Where does one put items they're carrying? Under the rain
coat? Unless the coat is large enough, that's not practical either.

Also, raincoats have a nasty habit of letting the water run down the
collar and wetting the collar of the garment you're wearing. And
unless you're wearing some rubber sombrero, your face will still
get wet. Then you have the added inconvenience of having a rain hat
to lug around as well.

A good umbrella is more practical for most sudden downpours. It
stores easily and covers the areas that need to be kept dry.

As previously mentioned, a good golf umbrella is well made, holds up
to winds gusts better and can be purchased at Costco or Sams for
much less than a local pro shop.
