Did any of you ever stay in a motel in Kentucky? Do you still have
your motel bill, so you can see how much tax you paid? The reason I
ask is because we stayed in a motel there and the clerk used a tax
rate table that looked fake. Most tax rate tables are published by
the government, but this one was typed up and photocopied. Is it very
common for motels to use fake tax rates to collect extra money from
customers?
I'll have to look it up when I get home. I just stayed there a couple
months ago. Don't remember what was charged for tax, so it must not have
been too unusual. Lots of areas like to charge REALLY high tax rates for
motel rooms, to screw visitors. It's legal and normal. I've seen as high
as 15%. -Dave
