Good question, considering that DSL is better in almost every way. The only

you only achieve those higher speeds at low traffic times, but cable modem

Cable & DSL both have potential congestion points where other users can affect
your available bandwidth. For cable, it's typically in the neighborhood. For
DSL, it's usually in your local ILEC Central Office. While you may have a
dedicated pair from your house to the CO, your traffic is usually muxed up to
a link to the ISP. At that point, you are contending with others for the
available bandwidth. www.dslreports.com is a good source of info on this
topic.

Well put Nosmo King.

I get a kick out of the people that think cable is prone to conjestion
slowdowns but DSL is immune. I have had cable for about 8 years now and
have never experienced slow down due to local conjestion. Typical download
speed on my systems has been right around 4.7 Mb to 4.9 Mb any time I have
measured it.

(Yes there have been issues with router problems, a major backbone being
down, DNS problems, etc. These type of faults come and go on any system,
be it cable, DSL, cell or even telephone.)
