Since it sounds like you think broadband is broadband is broadband
and the underlying service doesn't seem to make a difference, just
get whatever is cheapest.
Around here there are vast differences in the service and price isn't
the only consideration.
For the most part, "broadband is broadband is broadband" is a pretty
accurate statement. I've had 3 different DSL services in my homes, all at
different speeds. I've had 3 different cable modem services in my homes
also, all at different speeds. The fastest broadband connection I ever had
in my home was my current Time-Warner cable modem. It is 5M download.
Overall, I was happiest with DSL, though. DSL is usually cheaper, and it is
CONSISTENT. Yes, cable modem can be lightning fast, and it can be faster
than DSL. I've seen cable modems slow to a crawl, though, at peak usage
times. In my previous house, I'd see significant slowdowns on cable modem
around 8PM every day. In my current house, the only time the cable modem
slows down significantly is when local schools are on vacation. I also see
slowdowns on Saturdays, sometimes. But with DSL, I never saw a slowdown,
ever.
Now someone will state the obvious that all Internet connections are shared.
But in my experience, the "sharing" with a DSL line happens far enough away
from -my- modem as to not affect it. Also in my experience, the "sharing"
on a cable modem happens close enough to -my- modem to significantly slow it
down when other people in my neighborhood are using it heavily.
IMHO, give me slower but consistent anyday. I'm not downloading pirated
movies or any crap like that, so a consistently fast connection to browse
the web and check my e-mail is all I need.
Having said that, I would state that I'm not unhappy with TW cable modem
service. So it slows down sometimes, so what? Still, if AOL would live up
to their offer of AOL highspeed for ~$25/month, I'd probably jump on it.
Being a long-term customer of both DSL and cable modem, I really don't care
which technology is used to give me my broadband connection. But at the
same price point, I'd go for DSL, even if the DSL was "slower". That's a
personal preference based on experience with both technologies. DSL is
better. -Dave
