Visa debit card and return of items bought

If I have to return an item purchased because of defect, in which I
paid for through my checking account with a Visa Debit Card, can credit
be restored to the account through the debit card, just the same as if
I made the purchase with a "credit card". Also, is it an instantaneous
credit back onto my account, since it was a debit transaction? Thanks.
