I have a spot on my kitchen ceiling which is about 2 inches in
diameter. The paint is slightly discolored and warped but the drywall
is not soft as I would expect it to be from a roof leak. Could this
have been caused by an external source of moisture such as splashed
water from the sink?

Could...

Could also be a roof leak that is not wet right now...

Even though it's not wet right now I would have expected it to me sort
of soft but it's not.
