Re: new AC tonnage options

How many tons is the current unit and what has been your experience
with it when it was still working OK?
The lable is missing from the unit, but I'm told it was probably a 3-
ton. The thing is 28 years old, so take it for what its worth. I'm
not sure original capacity or efficiency measurements apply to it
anymore. I don't remember the house being too humid when running it,
but I do remember it being a little warmer upstairs and the thing
having to run a lot on hot days (although I usually didn't turn it
down too low). This could be due not only to the age, but also to the
sub-par ventalation I have.

If 2.5 is the right size, I don't believe you will run into serious
overcapacity like freezing or excess humidity by going to 3 ton. I
think you'd have to oversize it a lot more than that. And if I wasn't
sure, I'd rather be a bit over instead of under.
I've read a lot of things saying going under is safer. But, I'm
starting to wonder if those are out of date. They mainly cited
freezing coils, which I'm told is no longer a problem with modern
coils. Something about a thermatic shutoff that saves them from
freezing.

I called one of my neighbors who has the same model as me, and
apparently he has a 3-ton. Says he doesn't run it often, but has
never noticed a problem with humidity or freezes. So, I'm starting to
lean towards the 3-ton. I also emailed American Standard (they had no
phone number listed) to see what they have to say. These are both
certified AS dealers giving me different info here..

Anyway, thanks for your 2 cents on this.
