Hi,

Yesterday, to my surprise, I saw hundreds of termites coming out the hinge
of the door. I could not believe my eyes. Hundreds of them coming out in
every second! I was almost panic. We bought this town house in Northern
Virginia 3 years ago. So far so good. No termites ever showed up before.

We sprayed to them some chemicals for killing ants, or mosquitoes. They
are killed right away.

Today they are coming out again ...

Right now, we are calling professional pest control companies and shopping
around. Beside that, I am wondering if you could kindly give me some
advice.

I carefully looked at the hinge of our door, the door of our house to
outside. I don't understand why termites come from underneath of it. Does
that mean the wood underneath the hinge has already been eaten by them?

Oh, dear. That's awful.

It sounds like you have a termite infestation, and have had one for some
time. Termites swarm every X years (six? seven? I forget.), and yours are
swarming. I would guess that at least some of them are living in the wood
of, and/or surrounding, your door. Probably elsewhere as well. So
that's the bad news.

The good news is that you can do termite control, either by tenting, or by
using other chemical treatments. I have done both. The tenting didn't
work for long - I had a new infestation a few years later. The second
treatment is some stuff that my new termite guy has put in by drilling holes
and dropping it in the walls. That seems to be doing well enough - we
haven't seen any new evidence of bugs.

Don't panic. Termites are controllable, but you should probably assume
that you are going to need to treat every so often. Contact a pro. I don't
know where you are, but if you're in central florida, I can give you the
name of my guy. He's great.

Best wishes,

Donna
