Remove the Drain Trap
Lastly, a stubborn clog in a sink or drain that hasn't been cleared
through simple methods may require a more direct approach to clog
busting. It might be necessary to take the sink drain apart and remove
the trap for cleaning.
I'd question "lastly." Doing this as the next step if the clog isn't easily
cleared with a plunger and the cause of the clog isn't easily accessible at
the top, will usually save a lot of time. If you are going to need a drain
auger, you might as well have one less elbow to maneuver through. There is
also little point in wasting chemicals before you've made sure the plumbing
that you can reach is clear. Fishing hair and debris from the tailpiece
works better from below than above -- gravity is helping instead of fighting
you. And who knows, you might find a diamond ring in the trap....
