Re: Digital Elec. meter - is this a problem?

Desperately seeking help, guidance, advice, info. Long story short is,
reside in Clearwater FL, 1 month ago local power co, (Progress Energy)
swapped out our old electric meter on house to new honeywell digital -
the kind that sends a signal out and truck rides down street collecting
signals for meter readings. Within days of installation, our UPS on our
main PC (we have 3, networked wireless w/road runner internet) would
sound alarm, mostly at night and in morning, sometimes as often as 20+
times an hour. Never did this before except maybe during thunderstorms,
but only once/twice. Let about a week go by of this nonsense, and
called Progress Energy, complained that it has to be the new meter,
they send someone out, of course it tests fine. Fast forward one month
later, UPS now no longer works...it beeps but when power goes out, its
not giving battery back up. Our electric goes off EVERY DAY - when I
come home from work every day I have to reset clocks, the wireless hub,
cable modem, etc. Sometimes it blinks off middle of night too.
Sometimes it browns out for a second, not enough to cause all the
clocks to go off but some are xtra sensitive and do (like the stove).
Now a brand new monitor to one of the pc's is burned out - this was on
the UPS that is no longer working...and a network card 1 month old is
shot on another PC, and the PC is the far bedroom - which is on other
side of house near new digital meter - can no longer get a wireless
signal. PC tech out to house yesterday, power went off twice, he really
thinks the meter is causing problems, too much of a coincidence right.?
We want to get an electician in to test the house just to rule
out...but husband just got laid off last month and money is
tight...called Progress Energy again today, they sent someone back out,
and they are still saying meter is fine...but really...I am really
worried that it isnt fine, we never had any problems like this until 1
month ago. Is it really just a weird coincidence or does anyone here
have any stories, ideas, etc. Oh and the first repair guy they sent out
- told me off the record that they've been getting lots of service
calls since the meters have been swapped out in our city. Thanks for
any info you can share.

I'd ask the power company to install a recording device at one of your
electric outlets--maybe two devices at 2 outlets to cover both of the
incoming hot lines from the power company. Have these recorders collect data
24 hours a day for a week or so. The recordings will show if there are
intermittent brown outs, outages or whatever. Given the flack you're being
given, I'd ask to see the data when they come to retrieve the recorders. I'd
hope the recorders are capable of detailing undervoltage, overvoltage and
outages.

I'd also say that either your UPS is shot or its battery has failed if
it's unable to supply power during these outages. In any event, I'd keep a
tally on equipment failures in your home and wish you the best at getting
the power company to replace them if the cause was a failure on their end.
