formatiert werden sollte.

Die Auswahlmöglichkeiten waren wieder nur NTFS schnell oder NTFS
normal formatieren. Kein FAT32.

Warum ist das so?

Weil MS das so will. Vermutlich wg. der Dateirechten-Geschichten (sonst ist das mit den verschiedenen Benutzer-Profilen und Admin/nicht-Admin fuer'n Arsch), weil NTFS mit Dateien >4GB umgehen und vielleicht weil NTFS-Schreibzugriff von alternativen OSs noch nicht so ausgereift ist, weil die Specs. noch nicht (ganz?) offen liegen (was eine Systemreparatur IMHO unnoetig kompliziert macht).

Ich hatte im uebrigen mit meinem Notebook dieses Problem nicht. Das hatte ab Werk FAT32 bzw. einfach die Recovery-CDs zurueckspielen und dann halt WinXP dekontaminieren (uralter Acrobat, IIRC auch InCD und solcher Scheiss).

Und wie kann ich die Festplatte trotzdem mit FAT32
formatieren?

mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/hda1
wenn ich es gerade richtig im Kopf habe (zur Not einfach "man mkfs.vfat" bemuehren). Ist auf jeder Knoppix-CD und so enthalten. In den kommerziellen Partitionierungstools sollte das auch moeglich sein.
Im Setup ist es IIRC zumindest bei den DSP-CDs so, dass man _ohne_ Formatierung der Partition durch das Setup WinXP auf einer NTFS- oder FAT32-Partition installieren kann.
